Polyethylene

What Is Polyethylene?

Polyethylene is a man-made plastic that is water-resistant and known for its waxy texture. It is an economical choice for at-home use and uses in swimming pools, fishing areas, golf courses, commercial spaces. Polyethylene is easily spliceable, lightweight, and highly buoyant. Pelican Rope offers both 8 strands and 16 strand Polyethylene Ropes (often abbreviated to PE Rope) for everyday applications.

What Do You Use Polyethylene Rope For?

Polyethylene Cord is a perfect hollow braid rope when you are looking for an economical choice for low demand, recreational situations, as well as applications that call for a material that can withstand cold temperature conditions. It is a multipurpose plastic that is lightweight and easily spliced.

Common Uses For 8 Strand Or 16 Strand Polyethylene Rope:

  • Fishing
  • Golf Courses
  • Swimming Pools
  • Household Uses
  • General Recreation
  • Commercial Applications

How Was Polyethylene Invented?

Unlike ropes that are made of organic materials, Polyethylene’s history can be traced back pretty easily to recent history. Polyethylene was first created by Hans Von Pechman accident in Germany in 1898 just a few years after he discovered diazomethane. Von Pechman was exploring attributes and applications of diazomethane and unintentionally created Polyethylene, which was noted as a waxy plastic material and was generally deemed to be of little use for a few decades.

Polyethylene did not get its day in the sun until the 1930’s when it was rediscovered at Imperial Chemical Industries in England. Initially, the process that was used to create Polyethylene in 1933 was carried out with a high-pressure system that ended with machines being contaminated by oxygen. Because this process was unreliable and difficult to reproduce, the idea to continue creating this new plastic was almost ditched completely.

This process was revised in 1935 by another chemist at Imperial Chemical with an updated high pressurizing system that led to a more stable product. Within a few years, Imperial began creating Polyethylene for industrial purposes. During World War II the plastic/polymer became vital in war efforts when it was discovered to maintain its properties at a low loss when used to carry radio waves for Allied Soldiers.

Who knew that a fiber made by accident would help protect the free world?

Today because it is so inexpensive to make, this plastic is used frequently for everyday uses. Its other qualities like withstanding extremely cold temperatures and relative strength also make Polyethylene popular for welding, fastening, and adhesive uses. It is maybe most commonly used in packaging.

What Are Some Creative Ways To Use Polyethylene?

Polyethylene strands have been used in crafting for a while now. Remember those silly homemade bracelets from when you were a kid that were made out of strands of plastic? It turns out Polyethylene is perfect for those. It also turns out that Polyethylene can be used for other crafting activities.

Some Ways Polyethylene Rope Can Be Used In Crafting:

  • Funky Rope Baskets
  • Colorful Rope To Hang Flower Pots
  • Hanging Colorful Holiday Decorations

What Are Some Applications Where Polyethylene Should Be Avoided?

While Polyethylene is an excellent material for a wide variety of applications, there are some situations where it simply should not be used. For safety reasons, Polyethylene should not be used for lifeline or safety applications.

Polyethylene is noted for being resistant to extreme cold conditions but it is not as strong or stable in extreme heat. In situations where heat resistance is needed, Polyethylene’s close cousin, Polypropylene is recommended.

PELICAN ROPE  1/2" - Rig Master™ 3 Strand Composite Rope

Quality as good as any other rope I've used. I have climbed trees for over 20 years. This rope works well for climbing, rigging, or pulling trees. I prefer a braided nylon for climbing (knot will allow faster descent then the twisted), however this rope surprised me how well it allowed descent. For the price, I will be ordering more..
